Unable to find work in Jamaica, Marcus went first to Costa Rica, and then he went to central jamaica. He spent two years in London before finally settling in America in 1916. Everywhere he went he was struck by the poor conditions and ill-treatment to which the black people were accustomed.

He founded the universal Negro improvement Association and preached self-esteem and a pride in his African heritage. At its height it had more than a million members. His ultimat aim was to create an independant state in africa which would offer social and economic freedom to blackpeople all over the world.

Through his plan was never realised his major contribution was to dream of a better dream of a better future for black people. Marcus Garvey died in London in 1940 and is remembered in Jamaica as a national hero
